A review. This review covers the main aspects concerning the chem., the biol. activity and the anal. determination of oxazolidinones, the only new class of synthetic antibiotics advanced in clin. use over the past 50 years. The synthesis of oxazolidinones has gained increasing interest due to their unique mechanism of action that assures high antibiotic efficiency and low susceptibility to resistance mechanisms. Here, the main features of oxazolidinone antibiotics licensed or under development, such as Linezolid, Sutezolid, Eperezolid, Radezolid, Contezolid, Posizolid, Tedizolid, Delpazolid and TBI-223, are discussed. As they are protein synthesis inhibitors active against a wide spectrum of multidrug-resistant Gram-pos. bacteria, their biol. activity is carefully analyzed, together with the drug delivery systems recently developed to overcome the poor oxazolidinone water solubility Finally, the most employed anal. techniques for oxazolidinone determination in different matrixes, such as biol. fluids, tissues, drugs and natural waters, are reviewed. Most are based on HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatog.) coupled with UV-Vis or mass spectrometer detectors, but, to a lesser extent are also based on spectrofluorimetry or voltammetry.

Further, compounds such as 2 achieve mTOR pathway inhibition, blocking both mTORC1 and mTORC2 signaling, in PC3 cancer cells as measured by inhibition of pS6 and pAkt (S473).

Peptides abundant in food and protein hydrolyzates are known to be important to both unprocessed and processed flavors. The effect of peptide bond hydrolysis on the formation of Maillard volatile compounds was studied. The Gly-Ser dipeptide bond was the most labile among all the Gly-X dipeptides (X = Ala, Cys, Gln, Glu, Gly, His, Leu, Lys, Phe, Pro, Ser, Thr, Tyr and Val). However, Ser-Gly was 2 to 3 times more stable than Gly-Ser. Volatiles formation was investigated using Gly-Ser and Ser-Gly as precursors in the reaction with glucose. Gly-Ser generated more volatiles than Ser-Gly which confirmed the pos. correlation between peptide bond susceptibility and volatiles generation.

The changes occurring to the volatiles during storage for â‰?2 mo at -18° and at ambient temperature were followed by direct headspace anal. Several components were highly susceptible to change, even at -18°. Overall, changes (increases as well as decreases) took place in about half the peaks, and these were interpreted in terms of the identifications made.

BACKGROUND : Coffee substitutes made of roasted chicory are affected by the formation of acrylamide whose main precursor is asparagine. One strategy for limiting the formation of acrylamide is to reduce free asparagine in the chicory roots by lessening the supply of nitrogen in the field. However, decreasing nitrogen fertilizer could affect the formation of the volatile compounds and, consequently, the sensory characteristics of the roasted chicory. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of the nitrogen supply in five com. varieties on their aroma profile. RESULTS : The addition of 120 kg ha-1 of nitrogen fertilizer in the field resulted in a greater amount of pyrazines in the roasted chicory. Triangle tests were performed to determine the effect of the nitrogen level on the sensory quality of the five varieties. The results revealed that the chicory aroma was modified in two out of five varieties. CONCLUSION : The results of the present study suggest that a strategy aiming to limit the amount of acrylamide could affect the sensory quality of some varieties of chicory. Further acceptance tests need to be conducted to assess the effect (whether favorable or otherwise) on the sensory quality of the coffee substitutes. © 2016 Society of Chem. Industry.

Quorum sensing has been implicated in the control of pathol. relevant bacterial behavior such as secretion of virulence factors, biofilm formation, sporulation, and swarming motility. The Al-2 quorum sensing pathway is found in both Gram-pos. and Gram-neg. bacteria. Therefore, antagonizing Al-2 quorum sensing is a possible approach to modifying bacterial behavior. However, efforts in developing inhibitors of Al-2-mediated quorum sensing are especially lacking. High-throughput virtual screening using the V. harveyi LuxP crystal structure identified two compounds that were found to antagonize Al-2-mediated quorum sensing in V. harveyi without cytotoxicity. The sulfone functionality of these inhibitors was identified as critical to their ability to mimic the natural ligand in their interactions with Arg215 and Arg310 of the active site.
